Spanish wireless operator Telefónica today announced the availability of its turn-by-turn navigation application “Ruta Movistar App” on the iPhone, powered by Telmap.

For the first month all users can test the application for free with no data charges. After the first month, Ruta Movistar is included free of charge for users on an iPhone Plus flat rate tariff of €25 a month and iPhone Premium flat rate tariff of €39 a month. For remaining customers with an iPhone flat rate tariff, the app will cost €2.99 a month, which includes speed camera alerts, which will be charged directly to the subscriber’s bill. With such a low cost pricing Telefonica demonstrates that operators still can compete against third party navigation applications on the app store.

Telefonica also added that the application is using Telefonica’s own A-GPS server which speeds up the GPS fix.

The map data is from NAVTEQ and includes Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar as well as the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.
